Is Anxiety Overwhelming You?
-
-
- Spinning thoughts that take you over?
- Sleep taken over by concerns?
- Jumping to the worst-case scenario quickly and feeling that is what is going to happen?
- A driving need to control everything around you, or you don’t feel safe? Or worthy?
- Feeling like you can never do enough? Or be good enough?
- Defeated before you start?
-
These are just some of the issues that fall under the category of “Anxiety”. It can feel as if it is going to eat you alive. Why does life have to be this hard?
It doesn’t have to be.
Life Happens in Big, Unpredictable Ways
We crave predictability and certainty, but life can blindside us or disappoint us, causing us to develop behaviors that we think will eliminate the possibility of something like that happening again.
It can’t, but we live in its grip and feel like it has taken us over.
Or Is This Your Anxiety Pattern?
You are always monitoring somebody’s – or everybody’s – mood. You do everything to try to please them. You always feel like you’re walking on eggshells. You have sacrificed YOU so often you really don’t know who you are any more. You’re not even sure about what you like or want, because it is always about others – and has been for far too long. You’re exhausted trying. It’s never enough.
Anxiety is Fear
That may sound too simplistic – but it’s true. Fear of the unknown. Fear of the worst. There is no limitation on what fears we can develop. Anxiety has nearly the same effects on us physically as trauma. Yes – physically. You know the feelings. Rapidly beating heart. A lump I your throat or pressure in your chest. Shallow breathing. Shaking. The list can go on – no two people have exactly the same effects. But we know them all too well.
So we try to control the feelings. Maybe even everything. And that is exhausting. You begin to feel drained. Defeated before you start. Like everything is too much effort.
Left unchecked, anxiety can easily cross over into depression . . .
And avoiding addressing the issues actually allows them to grow and get stronger. It is a vicious cycle – unless you get off the round about and head in a new direction.
Can you imagine your life with out the fear?
You Do Not Have to Live with Anxiety in Charge
Most people feel like anxiety is in charge, has a grip on them, and they feel helpless. That is a lie it feeds you! You are NOT helpless against anxiety – unless you believe you are. Wasn’t it Henry Ford who said “Whether you believe that you can or you believe that you can’t – you’re right”? You need skills and tools. Yes, we need to quickly help you develop tools to reduce the impact, but that is not all you need. We can help you develop a whole new perspective that puts YOU in charge, not your anxiety.
How Long Will It Take?
These patterns have developed over time. The wiring in your system – from brain to body and body to brain – has developed to function this way. The longer it has been functioning like this, the more developed it has become. But yes – there’s HOPE! Those patterns can be redirected and new ones can be formed.
Symptom-management tools can begin to help immediately – that is, if you use them and practice them. Redirecting your system will take time and effort.
Approaching Anxiety with More Than Talking About It
Your therapy will be developed uniquely for you. Traditional therapy approaches such as CBT, ACT, DBT are great – and we will definitely incorporate them in your therapy. But if you need more – say, a boost to get started or something MORE because traditional therapy hasn’t been enough – we can help you with system-calming approaches such as the Safe and Sound (Music Listening) system and/or Brain Mapping (where we can see just where the problem has developed) and Neurofeedback to help you rewire how your brain works much more quickly. These are medication-free, non-invasive, long-term approaches.
What Anxiety and Stress Can Look Like in Daily Life
Anxiety and stress affect everyone differently. For some, it shows up as racing thoughts, tightness in the chest, or difficulty sleeping. For others, it might look like constant overthinking, irritability, or feeling like you’re “on edge” all the time. You might be trying to hold everything together on the outside while feeling overwhelmed on the inside.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?
Anxiety can show up in a variety of ways in both your mind and your body. Common symptoms include constant worry, racing thoughts, feeling on edge, irritability, trouble sleeping, and difficulty concentrating. Physically, people often notice a fast heartbeat, tight chest, shortness of breath, muscle tension, or stomach issues. For some, it can also look like avoiding situations or feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks
How do I calm anxiety quickly?
In the moment, the most effective way to calm anxiety is to work with your body, not just your thoughts. Slow, steady breathing, grounding exercises (like focusing on what you can see and feel around you), and gently slowing your pace can help signal safety to your system. These tools can take the edge off—but if anxiety keeps returning, it’s important to address what’s driving it underneath.
Can anxiety go away on its own?
Mild anxiety may come and go, especially during stressful times. But when anxiety becomes persistent, it usually doesn’t fully resolve on its own. It often continues in cycles unless the underlying patterns are addressed. The good news is that anxiety is very treatable, especially when you work with both the mental and physical aspects of it.
What causes anxiety?
Anxiety doesn’t have just one cause. It can be influenced by stress, personality style, life experiences, and how your nervous system has learned to respond over time. In many cases, anxiety is your system trying to protect you—even if it feels overwhelming or out of proportion now. Understanding the “why” behind it is an important step toward changing it.
When should I see a therapist for anxiety?
The simplest answer is that the fact you are looking for answers means it is time. It’s a good time to seek support when anxiety starts affecting your daily life—your sleep, work, relationships, or ability to relax. You don’t have to wait until it feels severe. Many people benefit from therapy when they first notice patterns that aren’t improving on their own. Early support often makes the process easier and more effective.
